The Coastal Communities Resilience to Climate and
Diarrhoea (C2R-CD) project recently participated in the Danish
Fellowship Centre (DFC) organized,
?Bridging the Gap. Science for the Public?
workshop. The workshop was conducted in two formats; (i) online training on 11
and 13 October 2022 and an in-person session from 31 October to 3 November 2022
at the Training Centre for Development Cooperation (TCDC) in Arusha, Tanzania. The
C2R-CD project was represented in both formats by Dr
Yaw Agyeman Boafo (Centre for Climate
Change and Sustainability Studies, University of Ghana) and Mr John Annan (Peoples Dialogue).
The Workshop objective was to increase research and
science reporting and deepen the impact and uptake of Danida-funded research
projects related to climate change in Africa. It provided a shared
platform from which scientific researchers and professional journalists across
African countries could best collaborate to communicate research findings and
evidence-based knowledge.
Invited experts, researchers and journalists jointly
facilitated the workshop. It involved presentations, interactive break-out and
discussion groups and writing sessions. The training and presentation themes
included; (a) A shared African voice for climate justice (b) Converging points between
journalists? and researchers? pieces (c) Getting your message across (d) Bridging the
Gap between researchers and journalists. How do we collaborate? Some key
activities used in conducting these sessions included pitching sessions,
speed-dating exercises, group presentations, and writing an effective press
release.
Overall, the workshop was highly informative, and the
content and exercises used in facilitating helped journalists and researchers
better understand and appreciate their role in bridging the gap between science
and society with a focus on climate change and sustainable development
reporting.
